Thorsten Schmitt

Deputy Secretary-General for Administration

Thorsten Schmitt serves within the CIRAS Executive Leadership as Deputy Secretary-General for Administration, CIRAS – IIGO, and within the CIRAS Directorate for Scientific Integration (DSI) as Director for Holistic Cognitive Science. He brings more than three decades of interdisciplinary experience spanning cognitive and consciousness research, ethical systems design, technology, media, and institutional development.

His professional background reflects a rare synthesis of high-responsibility technical environments, computer science, integrative cognitive methodologies, and long-standing governance and media leadership. This combination enables him to bridge scientific rigor, administrative governance, and ethical responsibility within complex international and intergovernmental organizational structures.

Key Contributions and Expertise:
Thorsten Schmitt’s work focuses on the integration of holistic cognitive science, consciousness research, and ethical systems thinking into scientific, administrative, and organizational frameworks. His interdisciplinary foundation includes formal training in industrial technology, advanced computer science (Diploma Programmer), and extensive professional education in structured cognitive perception research, analytical signal interpretation, and applied integrative bioinformational feedback systems.

Beyond his scientific and technical background, Schmitt has built substantial expertise in investigative journalism, media production, publishing, and institutional leadership. He has served as Interim Managing Director of a television broadcaster and held senior leadership roles within a media cooperative and a trustee-managed charitable foundation. As founder of Free Media Networks Ltd., his work emphasizes decentralized, resilient, and ethically oriented information and communication infrastructures.

A central component of his research activity is the MetaVerse research project, which examines decentralized collective intelligence, sustainable cooperation models, and non-hierarchical knowledge architectures within complex socio-technical systems. The project functions as an applied research framework linking cognitive science, media systems, governance, and ethical design principles.
