Krista Kim is a Canadian-Korean contemporary digital artist, cultural thinker and founder of the Techism Movement, whose work investigates the evolving relationship between human consciousness, technology, art and the environments we inhabit.
Working at the intersection of digital art, immersive experience, artificial intelligence, extended reality, architecture and human wellbeing, Kim has developed an artistic practice centered on a fundamental question: how can technological systems be shaped to serve human consciousness rather than compete for, manipulate or fragment it?
Her work transforms screens, light, colour, sound and increasingly biometric information into contemplative environments designed to foster stillness, presence and connection. Rather than rejecting technology, Kim proposes a model of digital humanism in which artists, scientists, engineers and citizens actively participate in determining the cultural and ethical direction of technological development.
She describes this approach as creating “Zen for the digital age.”
Krista Kim is a World Economic Forum Cultural Leader and has participated in international conversations around technology, culture and human experience. UNESCO has featured Kim among its 50 Minds for the Next 50 dialogue series, identifying her work with digital consciousness, large-scale light-based art and the convergence of artists and engineers.
Founder of the Techism Movement
In 2014, Kim founded the Techism Movement, a cultural and artistic philosophy developed in response to accelerating digital transformation.
Techism proposes that technological innovation itself can become an artistic medium, while emphasizing that humanity, not technology, must remain responsible for shaping digital culture.
At the center of Techism is the concept of digital humanism.
Kim argues that artists and other humanistic disciplines must participate alongside engineers, technologists and corporations in designing emerging digital environments. Without cultural, philosophical and ethical participation, technological progress risks becoming primarily extractive, commercial or algorithmically driven.
Techism therefore seeks to reconcile technological innovation with consciousness, creativity and human values.
For CIRAS, this philosophy creates an important bridge between the Arts, Sciences, Media, Health and Holistic Cognitive Science Centers, positioning artistic research as an active contributor to technological and societal development.
Painting With Light
Kim’s visual language emerged from years of experimentation with digital colour and emitted light.
Since approximately 2012, she has developed a distinctive form of digital painting using the luminosity of screens themselves as artistic material. Rather than working with traditional pigment, she constructs evolving fields of colour and gradients from digitally manipulated light.
Her compositions draw conceptually from traditions of Colour Field painting while extending them into dynamic digital environments.
The gradient has consequently become one of the defining elements of Kim’s practice: colours dissolve into one another without rigid borders, creating environments characterized by transition, continuity and visual stillness.
Her creative methodology is also influenced by the Korean concept of Mushim, or “empty mind,” which Kim learned through her father, a martial-arts Grandmaster. She describes entering a meditative state before composing, allowing colour relationships and transitions to emerge through intuition and embodied perception.
This connection between artistic creation, attention and bodily experience has become increasingly central to her later immersive and biometric work.
Continuum — Turning Screens Into Spaces of Stillness
Kim’s Continuum series is among the clearest expressions of her philosophy.
The work developed from individual digital paintings that were subsequently organized into evolving sequences of light and colour. Accompanied by sound, these compositions became immersive environments intended to create moments of contemplation within technology-saturated spaces.
Early forms of this practice were presented through works including 8 × 8, exhibited during Nuit Blanche Paris in 2018 at venues including the Palais de Tokyo and Musée d’Art Moderne.
In February 2022, Continuum expanded dramatically into the public realm through Times Square’s Midnight Moment, transforming the district’s network of commercial screens into a synchronized field of meditative colour.
The intervention was conceptually significant: infrastructure normally dedicated to advertising and competition for human attention was temporarily transformed into an environment for reflection.
Later that year, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) acquired Continuum: Los Angeles for its permanent collection. The 40-minute work draws visual inspiration from the skies of Los Angeles and includes an original score created in collaboration with composer Ligovskoï.
The acquisition placed Kim’s work within an institutional history of artistic experimentation with digital media while reinforcing her investigation into technology’s effects on perception and interaction.
Mars House — Architecture Beyond the Physical
In 2020, Kim created Mars House, one of the most widely discussed works of early NFT and metaverse culture.
Conceived as a digital dwelling and meditative environment, Mars House challenged conventional distinctions between art, architecture and virtual space.
When the work sold as an NFT in March 2021 for more than US$500,000, it became an internationally discussed example of digitally authenticated architecture and helped expand public conversation about ownership, provenance, value and inhabitable space in virtual environments.
Mars House has subsequently become a reference point within academic discussions surrounding virtual dwelling, architecture, interiors, blockchain culture and the emerging metaverse.
Rather than approaching virtual architecture merely as simulation, Kim proposed that digitally native spaces could be designed according to psychological and experiential principles—raising questions that remain increasingly relevant as humans spend more time within mediated and intelligent environments.
HEARTSPACE — Biometrics, AI and Human Presence
Kim’s recent practice moves beyond screens toward biometric and generative environments.
Her landmark installation HEARTSPACE, commissioned by Julius Baer and premiered at Art Dubai in 2024, translates the electrocardiographic rhythms of participants into an evolving audiovisual experience.
Each participant’s heartbeat becomes a unique input into the environment, creating an experiential link between biological identity, digital systems and collective presence.
HEARTSPACE shifts the role of technology from observing or extracting information about a person toward reflecting their embodied presence back to them.
The work raises fundamental questions for the age of artificial intelligence:
What makes a human being uniquely human?
How should biometric data be treated?
Can technology deepen human connection rather than replace it?
How might AI systems operate in service of individual sovereignty rather than algorithmic control?
These questions have become increasingly central to Kim’s broader thinking around biometric proof of personhood, personal-data sovereignty and human-centered artificial intelligence.
HEARTSPACE has subsequently been presented at locations including MOCO Museum in London and Barcelona, extending the project into an ongoing investigation of biological presence and digitally mediated connection.
Digital Sovereignty and Human-Centered AI
Kim’s recent writing expands Techism into the emerging world of AI.
She argues that future digital systems should be organized around human agency, psychological autonomy and data sovereignty rather than extraction and engagement maximization.
In this framework, personal data is not simply a commercial resource. It is intimately connected to identity and increasingly to the capacity of AI systems to understand, predict and influence individual behaviour.
Kim has therefore explored concepts including:
- personal data sovereignty;
- biometric proof of personhood;
- human-centered artificial intelligence;
- agentic AI systems aligned with individuals;
- digital environments that support psychological wellbeing;
- technology as an extension of human consciousness rather than a replacement for it.
Her thinking proposes a transition from systems designed to capture attention toward systems capable of supporting autonomy, contemplation, creativity and meaningful human interaction.
Art, Consciousness and Wellbeing
A consistent principle across Kim’s work is that digital environments have psychological consequences.
Screens are among the dominant architectural surfaces of contemporary life. Their visual systems influence attention, emotion, behaviour and social interaction.
Kim’s practice asks what might happen if these same surfaces were intentionally designed to produce different states.
Instead of constant stimulation:
stillness.
Instead of algorithmic distraction:
attention.
Instead of technological alienation:
connection.
Instead of passive digital consumption:
conscious participation.
Her luminous gradients and immersive installations therefore function not simply as aesthetic objects but as experimental environments exploring how colour, light, spatial experience and digital interaction may influence perception and wellbeing.

For Louis Vuitton’s LOUIS 200 project, celebrating the bicentenary of Louis Vuitton, Kim was selected among 200 international visionaries invited to reinterpret the house’s historic trunk. Her contribution translated her signature gradient language into an object representing fluidity, coexistence, innovation and emerging digital culture.
She has also worked across major cultural and commercial collaborations, demonstrating how contemporary artistic practice can move between museums, public environments, digital networks and globally recognized institutions.
